Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of resilience skills training and emotional competence training on social adaptation among male secondary school students.

Methods and Materials: This applied study was conducted using a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest–follow-up design with a control group. The statistical population consisted of male senior secondary school students in Bojnourd during the 2022–2023 academic year. From this population, 60 eligible students were selected through convenience sampling and randomly assigned to three groups of 20 participants: resilience skills training, emotional competence training, and control. Data were collected using the California Social Adjustment Questionnaire. The data were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance, Mauchly’s test of sphericity, Greenhouse–Geisser correction, and Bonferroni post hoc comparisons in SPSS version 24.

Findings: The repeated-measures analysis of variance showed that resilience skills training had a significant effect on students’ social adaptation (F=15.893, p=0.001, η²=0.455). Emotional competence training also produced a significant change in social adaptation (F=8.987, p<0.01, η²=0.321). In contrast, the control group showed no statistically significant change in social adaptation over time (F=2.091, p>0.05). Bonferroni post hoc results indicated significant differences between pretest and posttest scores and between pretest and follow-up scores in both experimental groups, whereas the difference between posttest and follow-up scores was not significant.

Conclusion: Both resilience skills training and emotional competence training significantly improved social adaptation among secondary school students. However, resilience skills training demonstrated a larger effect size and was therefore more effective than emotional competence training. Accordingly, resilience-based educational interventions may be a more appropriate approach for enhancing social adaptation in male secondary school students.
