Abstract

Objective: The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of coping skills training on emotional well-being and the level of internalizing and externalizing problems among divorced women in Zanjan City.

Methods and Materials: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with pre-test, post-test, and follow-up assessments alongside a control group. The statistical population consisted of divorced women aged 25–45 years living in Zanjan, with at least six months elapsed since their divorce. Thirty eligible participants were selected through purposive convenience sampling and randomly assigned to experimental (n=15) and control (n=15) groups. The experimental group received ten 90-minute sessions of coping skills training, including problem-solving, emotional regulation, cognitive restructuring, relaxation techniques, stress management, and social support enhancement, whereas the control group received no intervention. Data were collected using the Keyes and Magyar-Moe Emotional Well-Being Questionnaire and the Internalizing and Externalizing Problems Questionnaire. Multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) was used for data analysis.

Findings: The results of MANCOVA demonstrated a significant effect of coping skills training on the study variables. Significant differences were observed between the experimental and control groups at post-test and follow-up stages (P<0.001). Wilks’ Lambda indicated a significant multivariate effect of the intervention (F=57.098, P<0.001, η²=0.815). Bonferroni post hoc analyses further revealed that participants in the experimental group showed significantly higher emotional well-being scores and significantly lower levels of internalizing and externalizing problems compared with the control group at both post-test and follow-up assessments.

Conclusion: The findings suggest that coping skills training is an effective psychological intervention for improving emotional well-being and reducing internalizing and externalizing problems among divorced women. By enhancing emotional regulation, strengthening problem-solving abilities, and promoting adaptive coping strategies, this intervention facilitates better adjustment to post-divorce challenges. Therefore, implementing coping skills training programs in counseling centers, welfare organizations, and psychological service settings is recommended to support divorced women’s mental health and well-being.
